Selena Gomez is gearing up to release her new record — the follow-up to 2020’s “Rare” — this year and has been subtly dropping hints about what fans what can expect to hear. However, it seems the actor and singer is more focused on her time on screen than in the studio.
In an unreleased episode of the “Smartless” podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, Gomez spoke about finding a niche of the entertainment industry “to just settle on” seeing that she’s done acting, singing and is now the CEO of her own cosmetics line, Rare Beauty. She told the hosts she does “feel like I have one more album in me” but in a perfect world, “would probably choose acting.”

In response, the group gushed over Gomez’s musical talents and pointed out the fact that she didn’t necessarily have to pick one lane, but Gomez replied: “You’re right, but I am going to want to chill because I’m tired.”

The complete episode of the “Smartless” podcast will be available on Jan. 8 but is already available to listeners subscribed to Wonder+.
Elsewhere in the episode, Gomez recalled moments where her heavy workload put her in a mental institute — a topic she discussed with transparency in her documentary “My Mind & Me” — and was the cause of her canceling a tour. “It just got to me because I love working and it distracts me from bad things,” she said.
Gomez recently shared the upbeat pop track “Single Soon,” which is presumably the first single off her incoming record, and also told Vogue Mexico that she had written “no sad songs” for her new album. Gomez and Afrobeats star Rema also jointly enjoyed one of the leading Top 10 songs of 2023 with “Calm Down,” which was certified triple-platinum by the RIAA.
